Stargazing is when the goat will hold it's head upward and appear to be in a mild state of trance. Most of the time it is very obvious but sometimes, as in this photo, it is not As apparent although the goat stays this way for hours on end. This goat was brought out of her trance state of stargaziong by turning on the TV in the kitchen. And she did recover after weeks of therapy from her bout with Listeriosis.
Stargazing (Opistotonos) is a term used for a neurological symptom usually associated with Listeriosis or Goat Polio (Polioencephalomalacia) also known as cerebrocortical necrosis - Goat Polio is a disease caused by an imbalance of the production or destruction of thiamine (which is produced in the healthy rumen of a ruminant) usually brought on by the intake of too many carbohydrates (grain overload) and more recently increasingly recognized an association with high sulfur intake and the ingestion of some plants - there is an imbalance of the rumenal micro-organisms and a change in metabolism that consumes all the thiamine made in the rumen.( Thiaminases)
Other symptoms of Goat Polio are excitability, uncoordinated staggering or the appearance of being drunk (ataxia), possible diarrhea, and muscle tremors. Goat Polio is a lack of Thiamine in the goat's system.
Thiamine is a prescription Vitamin B (B1) that comes in at least 2 strengths that I know of-100mg/ml, 200mg/ml and 500mg/ml - the dose I use is 1cc/100lbs of goat weight using the 200mg/ml- half of that if I am using the 500mg/ml, twice that if I am using the 100mg/ml. |
