Reference: Normal Vital Statistics

Lifespan average - 8 to 10 years maximum - 30 years

Pulse - 70 to 80 beats per min, faster for kids

Rectal temperature 101º - 103.5º..+/- 1º

Respiratory Rate - 12 to 15 per min, faster for kids

Rumen Movements - 1 to 4 per min

An inactive rumen will result in 'bloat' and this needs your immediate attention!

Onset of Heat - 3 to 12 months, depending on nutrition

Length of Heat - 12 to 48 hours, avg-24 hrs

Heat Cycle - 17 to 23 days, avg 21 days

Length of Gestation - 148 to 156 days, avg 150 days

Temperature

Body temperature is related to illness, infection, stress, exercise, and environmental temperature. It is for this reason I do NOT disbud (remove horns) from my goats ... You can quickly determine how cold a goat is by feeling their horns or inside the mouth, both should be warm to the touch - even in cold weather - if they are not ..take the temperature....In the case of the Angora goat in particular, horns play a big role in keeping the animal cool in the hot summer months....

If the goat has been excited or has been severely exercised (chased for some reason) or if it is a very hot/humid day..let the goat rest awhile and take the temperature again.

Keeping a record of the normal temperatures of each goat in your herd can be very helpful in times of illness.

.....Sub normal

97º to 100º

If this is a baby-KID...act NOW!

A newborn baby-kid can die from birth chill

.....Normal

101º to 103.5º

.....Slight Fever

104.5º to 104.8º

.....High Fever

105º or higher

If this is the case...act IMMEDIATELY!

Bucks who retain a fever of 106º and above for as little as 90 minutes can have their sperm population affected.
The first thing you will do is lower the body temperature by bathing the animal in tepid water...or at least put a cool cloth on his/her forehead....you will notice the animal is not chewing cud and this can be dangerous... At this point, you need to figure out why the animal has a fever....(IF you are in an area that has no vets that work on goats..you NEED to become your own vet!) it could be the matter of life and death....and believe me, you may think you can't do some of these things, but it would be the same as having the welfare of your child in your hands....DO IT AND FALL APART LATER....
